Alistair sat on the bed and stared at the ratted cover as he had done every night since he arrived at Weisshaupt a week ago. That day they had a funeral procession for Evane. He couldn't bring himself to look away from her. She looked like she was sleeping. Like any moment she would wake up and order everyone to tear down camp and get moving. She was always on the bossy side. Not that he minded. But she wasn't going to wake up. She was never going to wake up again. Tears welled in his eyes again. He wiped them away. 'I thought I was done with this.' He had always hated to cry. The Templars saw it as an action deserving punishment. For the most part he was just funny and sarcastic. But Evane had seen through that. She saw through the mask of jokes to the vulnerable person beneath. Though it pained him to admit it that was exactly what he was, vulnerable. But with Evane none of it mattered. Not race, not hair, not even his royal blood. It only mattered that they loved one another.

And now he was in his room looking for a way to be closer to her. The real her not the one in the tomb. The one that laughed at all his jokes and comforted him when the Arl was sick. The one who never wanted a Grey Warden's life but had given the ultimate sacrifice as one. And when she joined the Order she never complained or did anything but care. Now more than ever he wanted to know that he wasn't just making things up. He wanted to know that something of her was not his imagination. So finally he decided to continue his readings. He gently opened the tattered cover to the fifth entry.

"Entry 5

The Warden that was here earlier has spoken with the Keeper and they have come to the conclusion that the only cure is for me to become a Gray Warden myself. I don't want to be one. I told this to the Keeper who just said that I must go and get better. But I still didn't. Not that I didn't want to be a Warden it was more I thought Duncan just took pity on me and didn't want to leave me to die. I actually told him this to my surprise and his. He assured me that he would not take just anyone. He had confidence in me. I wanted to be a Warden but I didn't want to leave my clan to travel with a she… with a human. Not even one as honorable as this one seemed to be. Still it was my only chance at survival. After convincing him to let me say goodbye to my clan we left. Oh, emma atisha adahlen. Dareth shiral Tamlen, emma lath."

At the end there was a song Alistair recognized as an old Dalish eulogy.

"Hahren na melana sahlin
emma ir abelas
souver'inan isala hamin
vhenan him dor'felas
in uthenera na revas

vir sulahn'nehn
vir dirthera
vir samahl la numin
vir lath sa'vunin"

She seemed really attached to Tamlen and yet he never remember hearing about him. Not even in any of the stories that Evane loved to tell him of her old home. Alistair sat and thought about Evane and how she felt at that time. From the sound of it this Tamlen was her friend. He couldn't read the end because it was in elven but it sounded like a farewell. He felt so sorry for her. She must have blamed herself for his death. That was why she was always so concerned with everyone else's safety. Even if it meant hurting herself in the process. From the sound of it this was right before she got to Ostagar. He had to keep reading now. They would meet soon and he wanted to know the effect of his first impression.

"Entry 6

It is my first day at this old tower place what did Duncan call it? Ostager… Ostabra… Austingar… Ostagar I think. Well I have never seen a Shem before and now I'm surrounded by them. There are so many new lights and sounds and smells. I don't know what to go through first.

Well there's a thing called the Circle of Magi here. They are apparently the only ones that can do magic. And the escaped mages, called apostates are hunted by something called a Templar. I don't know what they are but they sound horrible. I think everyone should be allowed to live their lives however they want to. Any way… They also have things called Ash Warriors. They were nice enough to tell me about the founding of their fighting style. I want a Mabari hound now. Their supposed to be very loyal and loving animals. I also found another elf there. But he was just a flat ear content to serve the Shems. I met more people and spoke to a king (apparently a big deal) and I had to go into the Wilds, which made me excited. I hadn't been there in years, since our clan had last traveled through there. I was curious to see what had happened to the place. I was not happy with what I saw to put it lightly. The Darkspawn had tainted everything. The trees were toppled and the land was close to barren. It nearly reduced me to tears but I would never allow the other recruits to see me cry nor that other guy. Alira Alisr… Ali… Ali… Alisomething. But when we got back to camp with the blood and treaties Duncan had us drink it. Davath died, after ingesting the liquid. And Sir Jory couldn't go through with it so Duncan killed him. Seeing no way out of it I drank it and passed out from the pain. After waking I was informed that I was to enter a meeting with the king and some other shems with Duncan.

Now that I'm on the topic I think his name was Alistair. Duncan seemed to like him enough and I didn't feel the need to stab him as I do with most shems. Duncan is a good man though. Better than any she… Human I have met so far. He thinks highly of Alistair so I may give the shem a chance. Maybe. I have to go to the meeting but I'll be here to tell you how it went in a second-"

The pen scratched off the page and seemed to be collected at the end in a mass of swirling squiggles that took Alistair a longer time to decipher than it took to write he was sure.

"The outcome of the meeting was that me and the shem are to go to the tower of Ishal and light the beacon. Sounds pretty dull. We might play games. I hope so. I just learned a new one from the flat ears here. On a more interesting note I learned that if I asked Alistair to put on a dress and dance the Remigold he'd do it. It would just have to be a pretty dress. I wonder what the Remigold is? But I think we'll have fun. Even if it's a mundane task. Well I think the battle is starting I better find Alistair.

'Never again shall we submit.'"

Alistair closed the book. Evane had called him a shem. She didn't even remember his name. Had he dreamed the connection between them? No. It was only the first time they met and she remembered it towards the end. He laughed which surprised him. He hadn't laughed in what felt like ages. She did remember when he said he would put on a dress and dance for her. He had even forgotten that. She also said she might give him a chance and that they were going to have fun. Maybe he didn't dream all of it. He laid down on the bed again, and placed the journal under his pillow. He laid on his back, staring at the ceiling for a while before finally closing his eyes. He could see her face still imprinted on his eyelids from the last time they had spoken. She sounded as if she didn't care anymore. Maybe she never did. But one thing was for certain, he would never stop loving her. 'Not even death could separate us my love.' Soon he was fast asleep dreaming of his reunion with his lost Evane.
Yay Entry 5 and 6! These were alot longer than the last ones. I was writing at 1am again. I dont know why I love the night so much I just do. I was happy with this at the time. Then again I was also happy with the spoons and cups in the cupboards... so take that as you will. Please comment. I want to know if I should make something else the focus or if I should stick to this or if I should go through a day of Alistairs life at Weisshaupt. I just dont know. So PLEASE COMMENT! ;p

I love how she forgets his name. I've yet to find an opportunity to try that out in my fanfics. Hehe. Great to see someone else incorporating it though.

The "shem" part was also a very nice touch. I caught that and was pleasantly surprised to find Alistair's reaction to it too.

This is so much fun to read.
